Scottish ales are usually full-bodied and malty, with some of the classic examples being dark brown in colour. They are lower hopped than their English counterparts (once due to high import taxes) and often have a slightly viscous & sweet caramel malt character owing to aggressive boil-off in the kettle and somewhat incomplete fermentation.
